York’s Cafe is located in the centre of town. Immediately as you walk in you’re greeted with an industrial vibe. Visible pipes, brickwork, wooden tables and chairs which is all very inviting. As I asked about the coffee I was pointed to the direction of the coffee board, I wanted to know more about their coffee so I got in touch with York on Twitter who were kind enough to give me some more information on the beans, how they are sourced and who they are sourced from:
“Hi Luke
Our current espresso is a Nicaragua, Aurora, Washed process. It isn’t fair trade (fair trade is a negative thing in the speciality world) it is direct trade. Coffee runs via a seasonal calender so we change it every couple of months, we currently use falcon speciality but are open to using others. The roasters are Richard and Kirsty.
Hope that helps Luke any other questions let us know”
It is great to see they are supporting direct trade and both direct and fair trade all aim to support sustainability and paying fairly for products. I’m always drawn to companies that source their beans as close to home as they can so points for that too.

I ordered the americano for £2.30, so whilst not the cheapest coffee, certainly isn’t going to break the bank. When it arrived (promptly), it had a really delightful smell to it: rich and dark. Initially I felt that the roast was too bitter for my taste and found difficulty getting the full range of flavour. Milk changed that however and I added a little more than a dash, with that I got the sweet honey taste. I do want to go back and see if I can get the watermelon notes I saw on the sign.
York’s also offers food which is both vegan and vegetarian friendly, coffee can also be purchased direct from York’s. outside of coffee, York’s also offer movie nights, which I felt was a lovely idea and perfect accompaniment to a coffee and food. I didn’t get a look at how or where the films are shown but It is another reason to visit again. It seems like a perfect spot for a first date or an inexpensive night.
There is wi-fi which is password protected. Initially looking around I couldn’t see where the password was written or whether you had to ask. Being centrally located 3G/4G connectivity remained fast and constant though.
